Now this is a classic episode of Say Yes To The Dress. This is an episode all about opinions: strong opinions, bad opinions, conflicting opinions. Most of my favorite consultants are featured here – Debbie, Dianne, Audrey, and a special appearance by Elise. Plus, a comment made by a man that made me scream out loud while watching. We’ve got four brides to get through, so let’s dig right in.
We are STARTING STRONG with identical twins. Vicky has already chosen a dress, but she’s having hardcore second-thoughts after showing her friends photos of her dress. Specifically, she thinks that the back looks like a “down comforter.”
She’s not wrong, but isn’t that the entire point of this style of skirt? Her twin sister, Audrey, thinks that Vicky is going to fall back in love with this dress and just needs some reassurance.
Debbie puts Vicky in two other options, which are quickly shot down.
Audrey hates the first dress, and says that it looks like a Halloween costume and a twelve-year-old ballerina dress. Their mom shoots down the second dress and says it’s too plain.
Debbie sees Vicky starting to come around on the first dress, and goes to get Elise so they can discuss options for the back of the dress.
Because Elise is brilliant and wonderful, she immediately comes up with a solution that makes all parties involved very happy – including the alterations department, as it doesn’t involve a major change to the dress. I love her.
Next up, we’ve got Roz and she’s paired with my beloved Dianne. Roz has come with “three of my posse,” her friends Melody, Jamie, and Jen. Roz informs Dianne that she is getting married in Mexico on the beach, and her ultimate bridal vision is to look like a sexy sea creature. She also wants to jump into the ocean in her dress. Like Dianne, I am choosing to ignore that she said that.
Roz wants a mermaid dress (ugh) with no lace (sure). Her friends, already seated in the main showroom, have started making “reaction signs” to the dresses.
Now, this is a red flag. This seems like the kind of idea that is funny in theory but is only going to end with tears and hurt feelings. Dianne is starting to sense that this group isn’t taking any of this seriously anyways, and is trying to get the appointment back on track.
Here are the dresses that Roz tries on! Dress #1 is immediately shut down for looking like a marshmallow. Roz describes Dress #2 has having “Mexican flavor” and her friends describe it as looking like a piñata. Dress #3 though? Tens across the board from her friends. They love it! Roz loves it and starts to cry.
A veil is apparently actual magic on this show.
I do not love this dress, because it looks like someone wrapped 5-7 yards of heavy satin around her body, but that’s my own business. I sincerely hope she does not jump into the ocean in this.
Oh boy. Then we have Laura. You might notice that Laura’s wedding isn’t until 2011, which is over 3 years after this episode was shot. Audrey is immediately suspicious that Laura – and her friend Tom – are just here to play dress-up, especially after leaning that Laura has planned literally nothing else for her wedding. She doesn’t even have a date picked.
In fact, the only think Laura has decided is that she wants to wear Lazaro, and we get our first Designer Cameo™ that is NOT Pnina Tornai.
Pictured: Lazaro asking Tom, “are you the groom?” To which Tom replies, “I’m the gay.”
Getting Lazaro for Laura? This is how you know Audrey is a better person than me. If I strongly suspected this bitch was here to play dress-up, I wouldn’t have bothered him. But that’s just me.
Tom, who wants to be a fashion designer and in fact went to fashion school with Laura, is clearly running this appointment. He hits us with one of the funniest things I have ever heard someone say in this interview, “I have this love of fine sewing… couture… all the fashion concepts.”
I screamed.
Laura, in her interview, confirms Audrey’s suspicions by saying, “I don’t think you can pick the dress in one day, so today I’ll just be looking and getting an idea.”
Here are the four Lazaro’s she tried on. Let me just say – I like Lazaro’s dresses a lot, and I like these SO MUCH MORE than a lot of the other nonsense on this show. All of them are shot down. Audrey, who is clearly pissed about this entire situation, says that she doesn’t think Laura has the personality for this dresses. This messy bitch! I love her.
Since all of these are shot down and the store is closing soon, Audrey decides to go off-script and pull her own pick for Laura: a Kenneth Poole ballgown that you may remember from a few episodes ago.
She loves it, Tom loves it, everyone loves it, and Laura leaves empty handed.
To quote Audrey, “I don’t think she was ready in any way shape or form to purchase.”
Final Score:
- Designer Cameo – +5 points, +3 bonus points for not being Pnina
- Bride has a “bridal moment” – +5 for Vicky, +5 for Roz
- Brides starts with a very specific vision and picks something else – +8 points
Total Score: 26/100
What an episode! See everyone soon for the finale, which has Kate Gosselin – of Jon and Kate Plus Eight fame – picking out a dress. What fresh horrors will that bring. I can’t wait to find out.
